Hampshire Best Pubs

Golden Lion

This historic pub is situated in the south west of England, as its name would suggest. The Golden Lion is located on the junction of Topsham Road and Allington Lane. The Golden Lion overlooks the A3050 Exeter to Plymouth main road. In 2001 this grade II listed building received a freehold property, and it soon became a main feature for many motorway travellers that stopped off at this junction. The Golden Lion opened in approximately 1650; the current building no older than 400 years old.

The period when this pub was originally built was in remarkable contrast to what it has become today, Hampshire List (hampshire-list.co.uk). It started out as a wayside hostelry for weary travellers; labourers would also frequent this place to secure their last penny before going. Imagine the opportunity to be able to relax in the same room as Winston Churchill. Well, you can when you stay in the much-sought-after Golden Lion Premium Hideaway. This unique hideaway was used by the Prime Minister himself, and is now available for any lucky family to enjoy.

It is now a completely different type of classic UK Hotel (although the bar is still there) and certainly a beautiful one, which became more famous for its use in the movie St. Trinians – something I'd like to see if I go back again. The Golden Lion has a great history and was used as the unofficial mess during the preparations for D-Day at Southwick Park. The lounge was reputedly used by Churchill, Montgomery, Smuts and Eisenhower.

Now you'll see the landing craft beach on D-Day. It's at Southwick Beach. The pub next to the beach is called The Golden Lion. ". This former paper plant’s eight giant stills produce 700,000 bottles of gin a day. The distillery offers tours and at the end you’ll get a free dram of the good stuff. A big no-no. Wellington himself designed many of its principal interiors. Opened in 1994 and, true to its name, is shaped like a giant anvil.

The Tichborne Arms

I've never been to Tichborne Arms. I'm not sure why, as it looks like a great pub -- quiet, thatched, rural, and in the South Downs National Park. It seems they have a good reputation for fresh food (with daily specials), real ale and cider on tap. Equally important to me is the opinion of one Stephen Poole, who writes about beer and pubs for the Winchester News : "Although it's hard to find fault with their entire selection of real ales and ciders, I'd suggest you should try the Stableman's Gold (£3.

50) from Hampshire's smallest brewery - Stable Craft Brewing Co. As for food, the locally-sourced sausage platter (£9. While you would never have imagined a run-down pub being the centre of attention, The Roll Call is now a top attraction for those in search of great food and drink.

Why? Because it's located inside what was once a disused underground railway station – and as well as showcasing restored Victorian features, it also features a. The London Tavern

With our sister website, Review Centre, being one of the most popular venue review webiste in the UK and Ireland with over 115,000 reviews written about local restaurants, pubs and cafes, we are not strangers to putting bad reviews online or dealing with upset business owners. However we are more than happy to put positive reviews online for businesses that do a great job. I recently wrote a review about The London Tavern on our sister site www.

ReviewCentre. co. uk giving them 5 stars out of 5. The pub has been given a score over 4/5 by many of their customers on ReviewCentre who have also described the 1 star review as 'unfair'. You can view this 1 star review below:. People are a little bit obsessed with their beer in the UK, and there's no shortage of cunning spots to consume it. The London Tavern is one of those places - this village pub on the south coast has been given the title of best flagon in Britain, by real ale fans.

The reason? It takes care over its cask ales, which include local tipples from Ringwood Brewery and others such as Red Rat from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, plus regular guests from breweries further away. Set in the heart of Ringwood, surrounded by pines and lush green foliage, The London Tavern is a pleasant getaway from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Following a complete refurbishment in 2016, with a lovely dining area and comfortable bedrooms, the Yew Tree is a relaxed family venue which looks to the future but retains many of the traditional features that all good pubs should have. The Yew Tree is very much a family venue, we live just across the lane from the pub and our two children Olive and Felix are very much part of what’s going on.
